Sometimes, a tooth suffers from trauma or decay that is too extensive to be successfully treated using dental fillings but is still not extensive enough to require the full protection of a dental crown. In such cases, inlays and onlays are often the best way to restore the health and function of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are fabricated outside the mouth in a dental laboratory and therefore, are also known as indirect fillings, in contrast to traditional fillings, which are applied directly on to the tooth. Inlays fit between the cusps of your molars or premolars, while onlays cover one or more of the cusps of the tooth.
The procedure of installing inlays or onlays is similar to getting a crown, with the difference that less of the natural enamel structure will have to be shaved off. The procedure starts with the administration of local anesthesia. Any decay present on the tooth is then removed, and the tooth is prepared for the restoration. An impression of the prepared tooth is taken and sent to a dental lab to prepare your custom inlay or onlay. When your restoration is ready, it will be attached to the tooth with resin or dental cement. Inlays and onlays are conservative restorations and are incredibly long-lasting, strong and so easy to care for. All you need to do is maintain proper oral hygiene and visit our office regularly for cleanings and examinations.
